CFOXC is one of six non-commercial music videos that Heidrun Holzfeind had broadcast by the Vienna cable TV station TIV in 1999. Prior to the broadcast, she had put advertisements in the New York weeklies Village Voice and Backstage looking for singers and dancers, whom she then invited to audition. They were requested to prepare a song or dance of their own choosing, and were then filmed already during those performances. In that way, music videos were created that were produced without any commercial or advertising background. Holzfeind was interested in analyzing stereotypes and behavioral patterns connected with pop, rap and hip-hop culture, and in highlighting the tensions between self-marketing and self-empowerment. For the song Fox in the Box by CFOXC, Holzfeind combined the performance with footage from films and documentaries about the Afro-American civil rights struggle.
